DMG represented nine tenants at a large Oakland apartment complex after the sole elevator was broken and out of service for 143 days. The clients were effectively trapped in their units for almost five months because their disabilities prevent them from climbing stairs. DMG ensured the Landlord repaired its elevator and implemented a new policy for better maintenance and immediate repair in the future, accommodations for disabled tenants in case immediate repairs aren’t possible, new lawful fair housing policies and mandatory training of all staff. This settlement will benefit the hundreds of tenants at the complex and ensure that no tenant is kept from freely coming and going from their home because of their physical disability. In addition, DMG recovered damages for each tenant plaintiff.
